As the health situation has improved, the Portugal puts an end to the mandatory use of protective masks on public transport, a measure that has been in place for two years to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Given the favorable development of the pandemic and because the number of new cases has stabilized, it has been decided to put an end to the mandatory use of masks in transport“, announced the Minister of Health Marta Temido in a press conference she gave after the conclusion of the cabinet meeting according to the Athens News Agency.
The decision will come into effect after it is ratified by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The lifting of the measure does not only concern air transport and taxis but also pharmacies, where the use of the mask. Only in hospitals and nursing homes will the obligation be maintained.
Portugal has one of the highest vaccination coverage rates in the world. The number of young people infections is decreasing and based on the latest report of the General Directorate of Health, it amounted to 148 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on a weekly basis.
