The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today that he will go next week to a symbolic city of Nagorno-Karabakh, recently returned to Baku control during a three-day visit to Azerbaijan.
After the NATO summit in Brussels on Monday, “I will go to Baku where I will be received by my brother (President of Azerbaijan) Ilham Aliyev. “From there, we will go to Susa,” Erdogan said today during a speech in Ankara, as reported by AMPE.
The city of Susa was recaptured from Baku in the recent conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, in which Armenian and Azeri forces clashed last autumn.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at loggerheads over Nagorno-Karabakh since the 1990s. self-proclaimed and de facto independent democracy backed by Yerevan.
In the autumn of 2020, the war that broke out suddenly caused a total of 6,000 deaths and ended with the victory of Baku which recaptured many lands, including Susa.
During the conflict, Turkey backed Azerbaijan, providing it with mostly unmanned aircraft. Several countries have also accused Ankara of sending Syrian fighters to support the forces in Baku.
In addition to its strategic location, Susa is a symbol for Azeris, who consider it an important cultural center. Armenians consider it part of their own heritage, especially its cathedral.
Erdogan said he would wrap up his visit to Azerbaijan by watching a football match between Turkey and Wales in the framework of the Euro 2020 European Football Championship on June 16 in Baku.
