Best known on the indie side of cinema, Paul Mescal 28, is about to gain the attention of a new audience with the debut of “Gladiator 2” . Despite having already been nominated for an Oscar, the actor’s filmography is short and focused on independent productions.
The Irishman’s talent has won over the public, critics and studios in recent years, becoming one of Hollywood’s new darlings. With a recent career, he began acting in theater after graduating from The Lir Academy, in Dublin, Ireland.
Mescal’s first prominent role in audiovisual was in the adaptation of the best-seller by Sally Rooney , “Normal People” (2020), for television. The performance earned him an Emmy nomination and some recognition in the industry and among the public.
The following year, he had a cameo in the Oscar-nominated film “The Lost Daughter” starring Olivia Colman. In 2022, he won his first prominent film role and starred in “Aftersun“ . The indie production shown in Cannes was responsible for Oscar nomination for Mescal . On that occasion, he competed against Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), and Brendan Fraer (“The Whale”), which was the big win of the night.
After that, Hollywood’s eyes focused on the young Irish actor. Since then, he has been cast in several projects such as “All of Us Strangers” and “Intruder” which debuted in 2024 in Brazil and are available on streaming.
Later this year, Mescal returns to theaters with his first blockbuster: “Gladiator 2” . He stars in the plot alongside the Oscar winner Denzel Washington 69, under the command of Hollywood veteran Ridley Scott 86, continuing the legacy of Russell Crowe, 60.
While releasing his first large-scale film, the Irishman is already involved in three other projects: “Merrily We Roll Along” new film by Richard Linklater ; “Hamnet” from Chloe Zao ; and “The History of Sound” alongside Josh O’Connor.
