The shadow of the day, the love story between Riccardo Scamarcio and Benedetta Porcaroli

The shadow of the day it’s a film about fear, about what happens when war is coming and all freedoms fail, but it’s even more of a love story. We are in Ascoli Piceno, it is the Italy of fascism, of racial laws, and the protagonists are Luciano (Riccardo Scamarcio), silent war veteran restaurateur with no more hope, and Anna (Benedetta Porcaroli), a mysterious girl on the run who proposes herself as a waitress.

What makes Anna and Luciano fall in love are the silences, the games of glances, a dance and a red dress. Then comes the war, and all that that entails. What made Scamarcio and Porcaroli fall in love, however, we do not know, and apparently we will not even know soon. The actors, who had already met on the set of The Catholic school, according to the gossip columns, they have been a couple since last summer. Galeotto was therefore the set, they say so, as for Brad and Angelina. But neither of them intend to talk about it, not even when the film’s plot lends itself to sentimental questions.

A sentence, however, Riccardo and Benedetta repeat it in every interview and is valid for 1938 as for today: “The only thing that matters is love.” The shadow of the daydirected by Giuseppe Piccioni, is now in cinemas for 01 Distribution.
