The shocking story of the millionaire who murdered a wrestling Olympian

Millionaire John du Pont was an extensively educated man who had written many books. Something that did not help him much with the obsession he acquired with the fight, which even led him to the murder of a Olympian of the sport.

John du Pont donated a large sum of money to Villanova University to set up an arena for the school’s new wrestling team, provided he coached the team. Although he was quickly expelled after allegations of sexual abuse, he was not intimidated at all and built his own fighting center, which was well received by the public.

Things got worse for du Pont, however, after his mother died in 1988. Her death led to his mental decline and millionaire he soon admitted that he even saw ghosts in his house, while telling those around him that they should call him the Dalai Lama.

Unfortunately for Dave Schultz – a wrestler who had won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics and nurtured ambitions to make a triumphant return to Olympic Games of 1996 in Atlanta – du Pont’s unstable psychological state led to his death.

According to grunge.com, Dave Schultz worked for John du Pont, with the unfortunate wrestler considered by many to be one of the few who could handle the millionaire’s behavior. Unfortunately, du Pont had paranoid delusions and went to Schultz’s home on campus, shooting him at 2:00 p.m. on January 26, 1995.

Then there was a confrontation at Foxcatcher Farm that lasted for two days until du Pont finally fell into the hands of the police. He was tried and while he was considered mentally ill, he was convicted of third-degree murder.

Following his trial and conviction, du Pont never saw the light of day as free, with his lawyers trying unsuccessfully to appeal several times. The millionaire eventually died at Laurel Highlands State Prison of pneumonia at the age of 72. Of course, there was drama after his death, as he had left his estate to a Bulgarian wrestler named Valentin Jordanov Dimitrov, which angered du Pont’s relatives. They wanted to overthrow this will, because of the state of mind of the millionaire when he wrote it.
