The sinking of the Russian ship Moskva will have an impact on the land war

The sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva has some impact on the land war in Ukraine, according to Shashank Joshi, author of the Economist on defense.

The ship did not have cruise missiles that could be launched ashore, but provided air defense to other ships around it, which carried cruise missiles to hit targets in southern and central Ukraine, Joshi told the BBC.

“In a sense, it was a gear in the naval engine in terms of air defense, command and control, as well as communication with other ships that facilitated direct strikes on land,” he said.

He said the threat posed by the ship and its entire fleet, which is now off the coast, was forcing Ukraine to deploy more forces around Odessa, the city under threat.

“The ship also posed an amphibious threat indirectly through the ships it protected,” he added.
