The Stories We are, Andrea Ricci on the border between Ukraine and Hungary: “This is how we help people on the run”

Phone cards, food, an internet connection to try to connect with loved ones left in Ukraine, a safe place. These are the things Ukrainian civilians ask for when they leave Ukraine. As the war becomes more and more violent and the images of the massacres are daily, from Zahony, just two kilometers from the Ukrainian border, Andrea Ricciwho lives in Hungary and collaborates with the international organization Cesvi, he told us how people on arrival are assisted and why he chose to be there today.

This is one of the main entry points of people fleeing the war in Ukraine, Hungary. I have been here since the first days of March and what has me mainly is the fact of being an Italian resident with domicile in Hungary. So to feel this war very close. I am convinced that today there should be no more walls to stop the flow of people in pussy from conflicts ».

In Hungaryat the station of Záhony, Cesvi has set up a tensile structure that can accommodate up to 10 thousand people. To offer them a hot meal, information they need for travel, a Wi-Fi connection, phone charging stations, sim cards to get in touch with relatives and friends. An average of 500 people arrive at the station of the town every hour, 5 thousand a day. They are above all women and children but also the elderly and the disabled.

“We have a space entirely dedicated to children, the most innocent victims of this conflict. We strongly believe in the mission to create life opportunities for all these people and to guarantee them that the traumas of war can begin to be absorbed from the very first step in Europe ».
