Workers at the Central Bank of Syria returned to work today, following the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime over the weekend. Workers were seen entering the central bank building for the first time since Sunday. Mohamed al-Imam, head of a department at the bank, told the German news agency (dpa) that “some thefts” were recorded on Sunday. “Some of the money was returned, as security cameras caught the people stealing money.” Commercial banks also opened, but only for half an hour. The rebels announced a curfew in the capital from 4pm to 5am, saying the measure would remain in place until security was restored in the city. Yesterday the Syrian Central Bank announced that the deposits of Syrian citizens in Syrian banks are safe. Source: RES
