«The teenagers of today? The best who have ever set foot on earth “

Consider yourself a troubled generation, mistreated. All the worst possible has been said about today’s teenagers. But there are three pedagogical experts, Mirko Pagani, Matteo Locatelli and Giuseppe Ciccomascolo, ready to bet the opposite. In their essay “All good parents (with other people’s children)” , just released for Centro Leonardo Education, just released on this earth ».

For real? And why? @ «This is the only generation that will inherit a future worse than ours. In the 1980s, the future seemed like a better place to live. Instead, in the future, the environment and work will represent a huge problem. In this context there are young people, like Greta Thunberg, who spend themselves, and a lot, and who try their hand at innovative experiments. There are ten of kids under 18 who have opened a startup. It is a generation that does not enter into conflict and, on the contrary, seeks mediation with adults. These teenagers of today understood the pandemic before us, and they agreed to stay indoors in order to get out of it ».

And why, then, this freely negative judgment on the part of adults?
«Because boys are the mirror of who we are. It is difficult for us adults to accept that they tell us that we have ruined their future ».

How to regain a good dialogue?
“There are no recipes to follow to the letter. What we propose in our book is to get closer to the children by asking and asking them questions that have an evolutionary space, explaining what our values are and, also, staying away from prohibition, which has always failed “.

A few examples? @ «Does your child ask you to use the playstation? Well, don’t oppose your dry “no”, but try to enter his world and get to know him, and maybe even play the playstation with him and understand why he likes it so much, without liquidating his interests as if they were, a priori, garbage. At that point, then, you can put your stakes, which you must not compromise. But make sure that the limits you set are thought out, clear and also well explained ».

How can technology go from being a threat to an asset? @ «A prime example. If Covid had exploded in 1993, it would not have been able to continue working in smart working, nor to see relatives and friends on a video call, nor to share and learn invaluable information. We do not deny the dangerous aspects of technology, but we must be aware that it always depends on how the human being uses it. It is never a machine, for example, that decides to do sexting. Children have more techniques than adults, but less digital wisdom: it is up to the parents to guide them in the certification of the messages they can convey online ».
