The third player who enters the wedge in the e-shops of Greek supermarkets

By George Lampiris

A third player, particularly predictable, has recently emerged in the electronic supermarket market in Greece, according to data presented by Panagiotis Gezerlis, founder and CEO of the electronic supermarket and pharmacy measurement company, Convert Group. This player is none other than the efood market service of efood with activity in the distribution of supermarket items, where as characteristically mentioned during his presentation Mr. Gezerlis from the podium of the general assembly of ECR Hellas, – a body that focuses on cooperation of supermarkets with suppliers and industry – this particular efood online super market did not exist last year.

As evidenced by developments in the fast-moving consumer goods retail market, efood and distribution platforms with supermarket delivery services such as Wolt Market are the next major market player with significant growth prospects.

Based on what Mr. Gezerlis characteristically stated at the moment, efood market is the third player behind Sklavenitis and AB Vassilopoulos in the field of electronic supermarkets, while he expressed the assessment that in a year from now it will have doubled its turnover .

Sales decline by 3.7% from online supermarkets in March

At the same time, according to the presentation of the head of Convert Group, electronics supermarkets have increased their sales by 34% in the last twelve months. However, as shown by the course of March 2022, if compared to the corresponding month of 2021, there is a decline in sales by 3.7%, which is attributed, among other things, to the special conditions prevailing in the market due to strong inflation trends and as all physical stores now operate normally, which offers consumers the opportunity to choose their products from there and not through online shopping. For the first quarter of 2022, 94% of the baskets purchased online from e-shop supermarkets were fresh produce. This fact comes to show once again the dynamics of the fresh food category, in which all large and small supermarket chains invest dynamically.

Pet products continue their upward trend

One category with enhanced market dynamics is that of pet products, which in the quarter of 2022 continues to move upwards by + 17%. Recall that in 2021 the total value of e-supermarket purchases was 224 million euros, an increase of 68% compared to 2020, an area that was significantly favored by the pandemic, as people chose to make their purchases from specific channel.
