The United States is no longer the world’s largest cinema market

It is a small revolution that we felt coming at great speed. The United States is no longer the world’s largest cinema market. Chinese box office revenue now exceeds US box office revenue for 2020, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Sales of movie tickets in China have so far brought in less than $ 1.988 billion according to the latest figures released Sunday, against 1.937 million for the United States. By the end of the year, the gap between the two giants is expected to widen considerably.

Experts had predicted the end of American hegemony for several years already. The coronavirus pandemic had to give the final blow to an already struggling American cinema market. In China, thanks to drastic and efficient management of the epidemic, the more than 80,000 cinemas are currently operating at almost full capacity with a capacity limited to 75% of seats occupied. By comparison, there are only 41,000 movie screens in the United States.

Chinese blockbusters are a hit

Between October 1 and 2, Chinese box office revenue already stands at $ 586 million. In the space of 18 days, the film My People, My Homeland, only screened in China, brought in 360 million dollars. But the prize for the greatest worldwide success goes to The Eight Hundred, a feature film about WWII that tops the Chinese box office with $ 460 million in revenue, surpassing the biggest American hit of the year Bad Boys for life and its $ 426.5 million in revenue.

Far behind, we find Tenet, the last blockbuster of Christopher Nolan, which is pale with its 323 million dollars. The United States also bears the brunt of the postponement of American blockbusters, including the latest Marvel Black Widow or the next James Bond No Time to Die. The American market is also penalized by the health situation still out of control in the country, where more than 200,000 people have died from Covid-19.
