The visit of Chr. Stylianidis in Luxembourg and Brussels

The visit of the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, to Luxembourg and Brussels, where he had a series of meetings with European officials, was completed.

During his visit to Luxembourg, the Minister met with the Director General of the NSPA (NATO Support and Procurement Agency), Stacy A. Cummings, with whom he discussed the process of leasing aircraft from Greece in view of the 2022 fire season. as well as the possibility of concluding new agreements with the NSPA, with a horizon of three – five years. According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in this way, the timely lease of the required aerial firefighting equipment for the needs of the country’s forest protection will be ensured.

“Having finally solved the problems of the past, we are moving forward and strengthening our cooperation for the protection of the country in the field of firefighting. This is a symbolic occasion, as this year is the 70th anniversary of Greece’s accession to NATO. We had “An excellent meeting today and we continue dynamically”, Mr. Stylianidis underlined during his visit to the NSPA headquarters.

It is noted that yesterday, January 20, the Parliament voted in favor of an amendment submitted by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, regarding the final settlement of a long-standing issue concerning the country’s ability to participate in aircraft leasing procedures. According to the ministry, “the relevant legislation finally resolves the issue of the country’s obligation to the NSPA, totaling 8,457,481.64 euros.”

The obligation concerns administrative costs and services of technical, flight and logistical support – maintenance of the air means of the Fire Brigade, as well as air firefighting services, through the lease of forest firefighting helicopters provided by the organization to Greece during the years 2011-2016.

During his visit to Brussels, the Minister also had meetings with the former President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, as well as with high-ranking officials of the European institutions. Mr. Stylianidis, in the context of his contacts, discussed issues related to the strengthening of the country’s potential for the absorption of European funds in the areas of responsibility of the ministry, as well as the implementation of the “Aegis” program for the overall upgrade of Civil Protection . The Aigis program, totaling 1.7 billion euros, is also funded by European funds through the EU Recovery Fund and the NSRF 2021-27.
