How to introduce fascinating but little known archaeological sites to the general public? With live shows: that’s why the Theaters of Stone network, active for over twenty years in the enhancement of a very rich heritage, proposes for this summer over one hundred appointments that will bring on the scenes of sixteen archaeological sites in Italy (from Tuscany to Lazio, from Campania to Sicily, passing through Basilicata) theater, music and dance performances.
It starts on Friday 25 June in the area of archeological museum of villa Ferrajoli in Albano Laziale, in the province of Rome; they begin instead Thursday 8 July the shows at the amphitheater of Sutri, not far from Viterbo, while Saturday 10 is the turn of the Roman theater of Volterra. But scheduled (until the end of September) there are also shows, among others, in Modica, Pantelleria, Teano, Milazzo and Caltanissetta.
Aurelio Gatti, director of the Teatri di Pietra network, explains: “Today as twenty years ago, Teatri di Pietra expresses a planning aimed at restore dignity to the live show and its workers: the Network has rediscovered and legitimized places of extraordinary beauty and historical value, whose relevance had often been overlooked by administrations, politics and tourism operators. It all started in the province of Caserta at the Campano Amphitheater, from which the Spartacus revolt was born, located just three kilometers from the Royal Palace and yet unknown to the citizens themselves. And then afterwards we entered Teano, Calvi Risorta, Sessa Aurunca, up to the Imperial Villa of Pausilypon in Naples; these the first sites were opened and inaugurated with a program entirely dedicated to the themes of the Mediterranean and classical culture “.
This year the calendar brings together different productions, from the story of Daphne, taken from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, ai Infiniti Mondi by Giordano Bruno, from the Dyskolos (the grumpy) of Menandrianus to the Journey of the Meschino of Gesualdo Bufalino, and then again Plautus e i Carmina Burana, Dante and Medea, Bach and Jazz, Socrates and Novecento by Alessandro Baricco.
