President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Monday (6th), that “there is no explanation why the interest rate is at the current level”, which is 13.75%. He participated in the inauguration ceremony of the president of the BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, in Rio de Janeiro.
“The problem is not an independent Central Bank or one linked to the government. The problem is that Brazil has a culture of high interest rates”, said Lula. “This increase in interest rates and the explanation given by the Copom (Monetary Policy Committee) to society is shameful,” she added.
The PT reiterated that the BNDES “cannot take money and return it to the government”. According to Lula, the bank was “a victim of defamation” during the last presidential elections.
“The BNDES never gave money to a country that was friendly to the government. The bank financed engineering services by Brazilian companies in Latin American and Caribbean countries between 1998 and 2017”, argued Lula.
“Countries that did not pay the BNDES, be they Cuba or Venezuela, will certainly pay the debts they owe to the BNDES in our government”, guaranteed the president.
Lula also added that the bank “urgently needs to return to being the inducing agent of development and economic growth” in Brazil.
