Sandro Pertinistanding at the third goal, shouting: “They don’t catch us anymore”. The President of the Republic was there to assist theJuly 11, 1982 at the final of the world championship that Italy was world champion for the third time, over forty years after the previous two in 1934 and 1938. The Museum of Figurine celebrates the fortieth anniversary of Spagna ’82 with a new display of the dedicated collection to the decade between the 80s and 90s, curated by Marco Ferrero and Francesca Fontana.
The exhibition traces the stages of the Italian national team starting from the qualifications, passing through the debut at the Balaídos in Vigo. And then the memorable matches against Argentina and Brazil and the splendid goals that lead Italy to the final with West Germany Al Santiago Bernabéu.
Of that day, everyone remembers Sandro Pertini, with his “They don’t take us anymore”, exclaimed in the 81st minute of the Madrid final and King Juan Carlos in the stands, the goals of Marco Tardelliwith the scream entered the collective imagination, Paolo Rossi and Alessandro Altobelli and that triple “World Champions!” repeated by Nando Martellini, who was the commentary, but also the pipe and the happy eyes of Enzo Bearzot who was the architect of that victory.
In Italy a party explodes which is the symbol of the restart of a country. There are images destined to remain, like outstretched hands of Zoff that hold up the cup and the card game on the return flight. All this is told through images and stickers.
That World Cup represents a gallery of extraordinary players who have entered the imagination of fans, but not only. Formidable on the pitch with the ball at their feet, as well as capable of being protagonists of an era: from Socrates to Maradona, from Platini to Paolo Rossi. Characters who cross cultural and social territories becoming, in some cases, real icons.
They don’t take us anymore. 40 years since Mundial ’82
