This car is called the best for today! Geely Tugella Review 2022

A small lyrical digression.

Have you ever driven a modern Volvo? Some of my materials about this Swedish brand were published on Threshbox, you can easily find them. So, I mean, Volvo is now part of the Geely group of companies, and therefore there are a lot of similar experiences from Tugella. Maybe this is her secret? Let’s figure it out!

Characteristics

  • Gearbox: Aisin eight-speed automatic.

Deserves a brighter appearance?

Indeed, no matter how much I looked at the flagship Geely in Russia, it always seems to me that it lacks the courage that its competitors have. And he deserves it. The updated version of 2022 was redrawn here and there, the main distinguishing feature is the four exhaust pipes. And after all, they suit her, the dynamics of this car is very good. But in general, this crossover coupe requires global changes. Well, that’s my opinion, of course. It is important to note that the machine still looks holistic, although it is a bit overloaded with details. And, it also now has a small decorative spoiler on the back. Cannon race! And, another cool color that I got for the test.

I can’t help but talk about “everyday life”. Keyless access to the trunk, power door, there is an opening with a wave of the foot. Works flawlessly, great. Inside 446 liters of volume, a pocket on the side, a pair of hooks, two light bulbs (what a joy!) And a 12-volt outlet. In the subfield there is a dokatka, a tool and a few more cells. Worthy!

The second row meets … with excellent branded rubber mats! No, well, really, they are good, overlapped.

There are also air vents, two USB connectors, Type-A and Type-C (also new, by the way) and sofa heating. The buttons, however, are very low and I additionally informed all passengers about the heating, because it is difficult to notice the buttons. Both seat backs are upholstered in plastic in front, a hint of a family car? Pockets available. The backs of the second row are not regulated in any way, but the side head restraints are very stylish. Folding armrest in the center with grooves for containers available. Room in the knees, only if the driver is not taller than 180 centimeters. The review is not bad, but the rising side line of the window makes itself felt. Here it would be possible to finish, but I notice the buttons for adjusting the passenger seat! For what? Why? Children can play with them, rather annoying the passenger. Yes, and for the panoramic roof – like!

I will deprive the passenger seat of attention, I have already said about the adjustment buttons. Available, by the way, and the usual, at the end of the seat. And yet, according to the custom of Chinese ergonomics, the passenger has a multimedia off button and volume. Touch.

All the most interesting for the driver. Yes, levers from a Volvo, part of the graphics of a digital tidy … but is that bad? An excellent guideline! And most importantly, it is that everything here is very pleasantly pressed, spinning, stretching, and so on. Tactile is very, very cool. You can argue, they say, so what? So from the little things the overall picture of perception is built, isn’t it? I think this is partly why many people love Geely.

And then there is a normal, adequate, pleasant sound of turn signals and emergency lights. Thank you!

Another cool point is the physical interface of the climate. Down with sensory fantasies, knobs and keys – this is the happiness of the driver, especially on the move. Thank you here too.

Well, now to the nuances. So, perhaps the main disappointment is that there is no CarPlay and Android Auto. Alas and ah. It is proposed to shove the smartphone under the climate control unit, which is also not very convenient, and I threw it into the cup holder. But that’s not all. By default, it is very difficult to find a heated steering wheel, a “mesh” windshield and washer nozzles in a car … they are hidden in the curtain from above (swipe from top to bottom across the screen) and there you need to reassign the tile elements … horror (I always reset the auto settings to make it clear what the manufacturer offers by default). Yes, you can object: “Well, ask at a car dealership, google it.” It is possible, but I want everything to be intuitive and understandable. Moreover, the driver has already NINE plug-buttons at hand. That is, it was possible to do without ordeals with a curtain and keep them busy with something.

Tidy, we can say, by today’s standards is simple. Although there are several themes and you can give it a futuristic look. But the classic one, with dials, is best read. By the way, I noticed that all the animation works very quickly and in general I got the impression that there is a screen with a high refresh rate. Great!

What else? The Flagship Sport package has a black interior, including the ceiling. It’s a matter of taste, I understand. The roof is also black, so it will be very warm in summer. There are no questions about the materials in the decoration, even the rear passengers have a perfectly decorated door. The chairs are comfortable with Alcantara inserts. Even with the memory of the driver. Like that’s all.

As a result, the interior pleases, although there are small punctures, as you already understood. And I also had a slight feeling of tightness, but not physically, but visually. I think the fault is the fashionable “handle” on the center console and the dashboard with “overlapping” elements. And in the front passenger seat, on the contrary, you feel isolated, all because of the same handle and, in general, the orientation of the dashboard towards the driver.

I’ll also scold for the painted, not matte, lower edge of the plastic body skirt. But it closes the thresholds, and you get out of the car clean. And here are the illuminated handles, a trifle, but nice.

On the road

But this is already very good

And again a small digression. Engine. See this Lynk&Co nameplate? This is another sub-brand, under it power units for cars of Geely sub-brands are combined. There is even a team in the rally. Yes, with this name. And there is also a separate line of cars …

Actually about the motor: 238 horses, 350 N•m. Add all-wheel drive, turn on the sport mode and get a very frisky car. Here, four pipes will immediately match, and it becomes clear why Tugella is so loved. There is a reason. And in the cabin you can sometimes hear the whistle of the turbine. Enjoy, otherwise soon there will be only an electric hum.

The other side of the coin is consumption. Well, what did you want. There is an Eco mode, so you can save money in the city.

Before moving off, I turn my attention to a small gearshift joystick. And I am aware that two buttons on one end is not that convenient. Actually, this is the “P” mode and unlocking. But for the driver, this is perhaps the only ergonomic miscalculation (not taking into account the moments with heated steering wheel and glass). The steering wheel is both excellent in ergonomics and understandable in taxiing. One might even say driver’s. And for this, you don’t even need to transfer its gain to sports mode, its severity becomes painfully artificial.

Suspension? Befitting the character. A little tight, and perhaps giving a little too much information about the road surface. But for such a peppy car, this is the most it. Well, he’s not really talking about imposing driving, to be honest.

Well, do not forget, Geely has almost the best adaptive cruise control in its arsenal. And stand in a traffic jam, and comfortably drive along the highway. No sharp jerks, smooth and accurate.

Well, there is agility, there is excitement. Comfort and convenience in place. The noise is very, very bad. What else was missing? There were a few moments when I wanted to use the rear wiper … but there is none.

If there was a matte plastic skirt, it would be possible to move off the asphalt more boldly …

Wacky nuances

And now I’m sitting before the delivery of the new Tugella and I think, but it’s really a cool car. Decent equipment, nice materials. It’s not even that particularly kitsch, like many cars from the Middle Kingdom. Very comfortable in many ways. Nice to drive. You can fool around.

But stupid nuances, no, no, but cast a shadow on the impression. Well, take these stub buttons, and make CarPlay and Android Auto. And from a 12-speaker speaker system, you expect a little more detailed sounding music.

pros

  • thoughtful interior;
  • gambling character;
  • excellent adaptive cruise control;
  • physical interface of climate control.

Minuses:

  • no Android Auto, CarPlay;
  • visually it seems somewhat cramped;
  • not the most practical plastic around the perimeter;
  • some items are hidden in the menu, although the interior is full of blank buttons.

May not like:

  • no rear wiper.
