Thousands of counter-protesters gathered in cities and towns across England after a week of unrest. The rallies in areas where anti-immigrant protests were expected, such as north London, Bristol and Newcastle, were largely peaceful, with counter-demonstrators chanting “refugees are welcome here”. Police had braced for further violence, with thousands of officers on alert and more than 100 events expected. The riots were sparked by misinformation online which claimed the suspect in the knife attack that killed three young girls in Southport was a Muslim asylum seeker. During the unrest, mosques and hotels hosting asylum seekers were targeted, while shops were burned and looted. On Wednesday, shop owners across England boarded up windows and closed early, anticipating further violence as reported by the BBC.
