Its prime minister Poland announced today that it has asked the intelligence services to investigate the case of the rescue of three divers in the Baltic Sea near the port of Gdansk.
On the night of Sunday to Monday, the three men sent a distress call today, after their boat was damaged. They were rescued by the Polish coast guard. They stated they were Spanish and they were looking for amber. According to Polish media, only one of them had identity documents.
After being checked by the police, they were released. Shortly afterwards, the mobile phones they had registered turned out to be inactive.
“I have ordered an in-depth investigation into this case,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters after doubts were raised about the true identities of the divers.
Local media reported that they had expensive diving equipment and have already left Poland.
“Maybe these were very dangerous people,” Morawiecki said. He added that the security of strategically important infrastructure, such as the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and the Baltic Pipe connecting Poland to Norway, has already been strengthened. “It is obvious that with the war in Ukraine, the risk of sabotage by Russia has increased significantly and the security of the infrastructure must be strengthened,” he stressed.
