THE Israeli army informed the United Nations early Friday that the 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza should be relocated to the southern part of the enclave within the next 24 hours, a UN spokesman said. It is a warning that Palestinians fear could be a harbinger of a planned Israeli ground attack.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the warning, which came as Israel massed tanks near the Gaza border and pounded the Palestinian enclave with airstrikes following a deadly attack by Hamas militants on Israel.
“The United Nations considers it impossible for such a move to take place without catastrophic humanitarian consequences,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

“The United Nations strongly urges that any such order, if confirmed, be revoked, avoiding something that could turn an already tragic situation into a disastrous one,” he said.
Dujarric said the Israeli military’s order also applies to all United Nations personnel and those who have taken refuge in UN facilities, including schools, health centers and clinics.
Israel’s mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The weekend Hamas’ rampage killed 1,300 people and it was the worst attack on civilians in Israel’s history.
Israel has so far responded by placing Gaza, home to 2.3 million people, under siege and launching a bombing campaign that has destroyed entire neighborhoods. Gaza authorities said more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed.
Over 423,000 displaced in the Gaza Strip
More than 423,000 people have been forced from their homes in the Gaza Strip, which remains under siege and hammered by the Israeli military, according to the latest figures from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The number of people displaced in the densely populated enclave of 2.3 million inhabitants rose by 84,444 people to 423,378 as of Thursday night, OCHA said in a statement released today.
The United Nations has launched an urgent appeal for donations to raise $294 million to provide humanitarian aid to residents of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The appeal is intended to offer assistance to more than 1.2 million residents of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) clarified, pointing out that humanitarian organizations do not have the necessary resources available to ” respond directly to the needs of vulnerable Palestinians.”
