Music legend Tina Turner, who died on Wednesday at the age of 83, was a self-confessed fan of Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna.
Three decades ago, the singer called Senna to the stage during a show in Australia, where she showed her admiration for the pilot and dedicated the song “The Best” to him.
The episode took place in November 1993, after Senna achieved his 41st victory in Formula 1 races, at the Australian GP, in the city of Adelaide.
The race was marked by Senna’s departure from McLaren, the retirement of his biggest rival – Frenchman Alain Prost – and it also became the Brazilian’s last victory in motorsport.
Senna, who would go to Williams in 1994 precisely in Prost’s place, won the Australian GP that year without major difficulties, with more than 9 seconds ahead of his rival, who came in second.

As was tradition at Adelaide racing, a rock concert took place after the GP. That year, the presentation was on account of the iconic Tina Turner.
Ayrton Senna watched the “What’s Love” concert from the side of the stage accompanied by his then-girlfriend Adriane Galisteu.

At one point in the show, the pilot appeared onstage and was greeted with a big hug by Tina.
“I’m fan! I’m really a fan, I’m very excited”, said the singer into the microphone, while congratulating Senna for the victory.
“Do you know who he is?” Tina joked with the audience. “The Grand Prix winner, well… the best! (the best, in English)”, concluded the singer before singing her hit of the famous chorus “You’re simply the best” (“You are simply the best”, in literal translation) in tribute to the Brazilian.
