To return the 10% fee to pay-TV

By Fotis Fotinos

According to information from the telecommunications market, the imposition of a 10% fee on pay-TV is back.

As everything shows, the Ministry of Finance did not accept the proposal of the Association of Mobile Telephony Companies (EEKT) to suspend the fee until the end of 2023. EEKT acted after consultation with COSMOTE, Vodafone and WIND – NOVA.

The imposition of a fee on pay-TV in favor of the Greek state was instituted in 2016, under the name “end to pay-TV”.

This charges subscribers to 10% of the total monthly bill of each subscription, including the flat fee charged to the business before value added tax.

This fee was suspended by law 4728/2020 for the period from 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 and thereafter until 30 June 2022.

Once the information is verified, consumers will see the next bills “inflated” by 10%.

On the other hand, the Greek government expects some revenue, as COSMOTE, VODAFONE and WIND – NOVA are estimated to have more than 1.1 – 1.2 million subscribers. In fact, it is estimated that with the imposition of the fee, the Greek state will receive about 18 million euros.

Now, if, as everything shows, the suspension of the fee is lifted, the telecommunications companies COSMOTE, VODAFONE and NOVA – WIND are estimated to strongly “push” the government to impose the fee on all digital platforms (NETFLIX, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney +, etc.), arguing that this is now a condition of “unfair competition”.
