Toffoli: Free press, university and judiciary are targets of the “engineers of chaos”

Without naming names, the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Dias Toffoli said this Friday (13) that “free press, university and judiciary are the three preferred targets of chaos engineers”.

The jurist was speaking at the 24th Brazilian Congress of Magistrates that took place in Salvador, Bahia.

Toffoli defended the importance of the teaching profession as an essential mechanism of society and fundamental in guaranteeing the truth.

“It is necessary to leave the comfort zone of the discourse that institutions work and will do the job. Democracy and its institutional safeguards must be permanently defended,” he said.

In recent months, several events – such as the case of federal deputy Daniel Silveira (PTB-RJ) – led the Executive and Judiciary powers to face each other in opposing positions.

In Toffoli’s assessment, “fundamental rights can only be guaranteed with an autonomous Judiciary and with an independent Judiciary that respects the rules of the game.”

The minister also stated that “there is no way to silence society and the rights agreed in the Constitution of 88, and, therefore, there is no way to silence the Judiciary that, when demanded, will do so, as it did, did and will continue to enforce these rights” .

“Democratic institutions and the constituted powers today are being victims of ignorance, or misinformation that is carried out against them, but there is also a need to occupy space, which sometimes we, as an institution and magistrates, are not occupying. ”

Toffoli also spoke about the pressures against the action of the magistrates, which he believes to be the result of “a solid rationale”.

In his view, the “objective is the creation of chaos, with the continuous agitation of public opinion, the stimulation of division and institutional and social conflict, turning against those who are responsible for watching over the rules of the game”.

“We are carrying out a day-to-day task of maintaining the Democratic State of Law, our democracy and the effective implementation of our Constitution. Defending the Judiciary and a valued judiciary is to protect fundamental rights, it is to defend the balance and harmony between the powers, it is to defend the Democratic State of Law.”
