The actor Tom Hanks 68, said she “made all the mistakes” while raising her four children. The “Forrest Gump” star is father to Colin, 45, and Elizabeth, 42, from his first marriage to Samantha Lewes, and Chet, 34, and Truman, 28, with his wife Rita Wilson.
During an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, the actor admitted that he wasn’t the perfect father, which led to some difficult conversations with his children over the years.
“I made all the mistakes. You end up marking your children in some way, always in the same way. And as they get older, you go back and [diz]’Hey, can I talk about how hard-headed I’ve been to you all these years?’ AND [eles dizem]’Of course, dad. I was kind of expecting this. Why don’t you vent?’ But I would say at the same time… is everything in a 50-50 ratio? Maybe the attitude and the life we lead. Laughter, these things are worth gold and precious stones”, he explained.
He added about his children: “[Eles me ensinaram] how different they are. None of them are the same.”
Tom told a story about his youngest son, Truman, remembering that he felt bad about not keeping his promise to take him to play baseball.
“He was younger, around seven or eight years old. I said, ‘At some point, let’s go to the park, take our gloves, play a little. Let’s find a spot on the grass. AND [Truman] said, ‘Okay, let’s do this,'” he recalled.
“But time passed and our trip to the park didn’t happen. Something happened, and I realized, ‘Ah, the sun is already setting.’ And I said, ‘Oh my God. I’m sorry. I said we would go and it ended up not happening. Forgive me.’ And he was like, ‘Alright, man.’ And he seemed disappointed,” he continued.
However, Truman helped his father feel better. Tom said: “[Eu disse a ele] I don’t want you to be bored.’ And he looked at me and said, ‘Dad, I’m never bored.'”
“And that… says a lot about curiosity and motivation and also about the comfort of feeling good about yourself, feeling free to explore the world around you… [Percebi que meus filhos] They had the ability to follow their own interests without being pushed, without being forced. I learned from that. They never said they were bored. They always had something to do, whether I understood their passion for it or not”, he concluded.
