Today, June 23, Toyota officially announced the launch of a global recall campaign for the electric city crossover bZ4X (2023 model year). It is noteworthy that this electric vehicle went on sale less than two months ago, but already now a very significant flaw has been found in the design of the car. The essence of the problem is that during the movement of the electric crossover, the bolts on the hub can loosen, as a result of which there is a chance of the wheel disconnecting while driving. Yes, this means that a modern electric car for a very impressive amount of money can lose a wheel at an impressive speed.
Accordingly, Toyota employees in an official statement urged owners of this electric crossover not to use the vehicle until the problem with the bZ4X hub bolts is completely resolved. At the same time, apparently, fans of the Japanese automaker will have to wait a bit, using a free replacement car – the company said that the investigation regarding the loosening of the hub bolts has not yet been completed. This means that engineers will need some time to first find the cause of the problem, and then come up with a solution.
And although Toyota did not have to recall too many cars (in total, 2,700 electric cars fell under the recall campaign, 2,200 of which are in Europe), a huge percentage of which actually still did not reach potential owners, this is a significant blow to the manufacturer’s reputation. The Japanese giant plans to spend almost $18 billion to have thirty electric cars in its range by 2030, but now there are clearly fewer people who want to buy Toyota products, which can lose a wheel on the move and lead to dire consequences.
