At least 36 people have been killed in a train crash in Pakistan, while there are fears that the number of victims will be even higher.
As broadcast by AMPE, the injured are over 50.
Omar Tufayl, a police officer, and doctors at local hospitals said the death toll would rise further as several of the injured were in critical condition.
Passenger stated that there are still passengers trapped in wagons that have turned into an amorphous mass.
According to Tufayl, there were at least 25 people inside one of the wagons that could not be entered by members of the rescue crews.
Information on how the accident occurred is still contradictory. According to one version, one train derailed and the other fell on it. In a second, one train was immobilized on the rails, all attempts by the inspectors to contact a second one failed and a collision occurred.
In addition to the rescue teams, units of the Rangers paramilitary force with heavy machinery have rushed to the scene of the accident.
The two trains that collided were operating the Millat Express (Karachi-Sargonda) and Sir Syed Express (Karachi-Rawalpindi) routes.
Rail accidents are common in Pakistan, which has inherited thousands of kilometers of railways and trains since colonial rule, when Britain was the dominant power.
In October 2019, at least 75 people were killed when a fire broke out on a passenger train en route from Karachi to Rawalpindi.
In 2016, a train collision in Karachi had claimed the lives of 21 people.
