Travis Kelce American football player in National Football League (NFL) for the Kansas City Chiefs, gave an interview to the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ)in which he spoke about his relationship with the singer Taylor Swift . Despite his success in the fields, he became even more prominent around the world after being approved swifties – Taylor fans – as the singer’s boyfriend.
The athlete was already honored at a show on “The Eras Tour” by the singer in Buenos Aires, when she changed the lyrics of a verse of her song “Karma”, while the American football player was in the audience watching. In the new version, she says: “Karma is the Chiefs guy, coming straight home to me”, changing the original word “screen” to “Chiefs”, alluding to the player’s team.
Taylor Swift is visiting Brazil and will perform in Rio de Janeiro this Monday (20). Afterwards, she goes to three shows in São Paulo, at Allianz Parque, on the 24th, 25th and 26th of November.
In an interview with the WSJ, Travis Kelce gave details about how his romance with Taylor Swift began. According to Kelce, it all started when he tried to meet Taylor at a show on her tour in July, but was blocked.
At the time, he says he tried to give his phone number to the singer during one of her shows through a friendship bracelet he made for her. The accessory is widely used by the singer’s fans to the point that swifties exchange bracelets with each other at shows.
Soon after, as he told the WSJ, the athlete received spontaneous help from someone within the singer’s team.
“There were definitely people she knew who knew who I was, in her corner [que disseram]: ‘Hey! Did you know he was coming?’ I had someone be our Cupid,” she explained.
Kelce only found out about this when he looked at the phone and got a shock: it was Taylor herself trying to talk to him. “She told me exactly what was going on and how lucky I was to have her get in touch,” she said. Some members of the Swift family, according to him, also helped Taylor speak to the player.
“She’ll probably hate me for saying this, but… when she came to Arrowhead [estádio sede do Kansas City Chiefs]they gave her a big locker room as a dressing room, and her little cousins were taking pictures… in front of my locker,” said the soccer star.
First meeting and care in interviews
Kelce, however, doesn’t give many details about his first meeting with Taylor. “When I met her in New York, we were already kind of talking, so I knew we could have a nice dinner and, like, a conversation, and see where things went,” she said.
Those who were most concerned about the relationship were Travis’ social circle. “Everyone around me telling me: don’t screw this up! And I’m sitting here saying: Yes, I got it,” he says. After all, Taylor Swift has a tradition of making music about her exes.
As news bulletins and video cuts showed Swift cheering on Kelce at his games, the athlete became strangely wary of the media. “That was the most important thing for me: making sure that whatever I said didn’t alienate Taylor.”
It was with this in mind that her mother, Donna Kelce, still berates herself for how she handled a question about Taylor on the show Today. When asked about her potential daughter-in-law, however, she tried so hard not to sound enthusiastic that she ended up seeming to disapprove of Taylor Swift. Kelce, not wanting her mother to feel bad, immediately called her and assured her that she did a great job.
Nowadays, as the relationship progresses, Donna feels more comfortable. “I can tell you one thing: He’s happier than I’ve seen him in a long time…. God bless him, he got that one right!” she said.
Travis highlights that he and the singer also share compatible worldviews, especially when it comes to family and work.
“Everyone knows I’m a family guy,” he says. “Her team is her family. Her family does a lot of things in terms of touring, marketing, being around, so I think she has a lot of those values as well.”
Travis Kelce doesn’t need the WJS ask about Taylor: according to the interviewer, Kelce mentions his girlfriend without reservations and describes her as “genius” and “hilarious”.
According to Brian Donovan, a professor at the University of Kansas who teaches a seminar called “The Sociology of Taylor Swift”, to the WSJ, the professor really believes that there is a public fascination with the couple. “It feels like a pure, pure moment of joy in the broader context of global wars, deepening political polarization, an ongoing health crisis,” he reckons.
“There is a lot of bad news out there, and this is a common story that everyone knows and can talk about. I don’t think we’ve had that in American culture for a long time,” the professor explained.
