Trump announces support for Representative Jim Jordan in US House election

Former President of the United States Donald Trump announced this Friday (6) his support for Representative Jim Jordan in the race for President of the Chamber of Deputies.

On the same day, he launched a poll for his followers to vote for their favorite for the position. The apparently incongruous movement has an explanation: Trump’s desire for relevance in the debate.

“Patriot”, begins a message sent to those registered on his email list – an expression with which Trump usually addresses his followers. “I will do whatever is necessary to help with the House speaker selection process.”

He adds that he will need a “strong Speaker of the House when he returns to the White House on January 20, 2025.” And it asks followers to vote, via a link in the footer of the email.

Trump appeared for three days this week in New York court hearings in the trial in which he and his sons Eric and Donald Jr. are accused of corporate fraud. Attendance was not mandatory.

Apparently, he considered that the event would help him present himself as a victim of a justice system supposedly controlled by Democrats – an accusation he repeated in several emails. And also that he may have considered the importance of dominating the news, taking space from pre-candidates in the Republican primaries.

Trump uses court cases to ask for donations. As well as the Republican deputies who led the rebellion and who also say they are “persecuted”, in this case by McCarthy himself, who controls the allocation of party funds for campaigns.

But public attention turned to the drama unfolding in the Chamber, which went into recess on Tuesday night (3), after the impeachment of its president, Kevin McCarthy, in a rebellion by eight deputies from his Republican Party. , with support from Democrats.

As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jordan acted in opening investigations for a possible impeachment process against President Joe Biden, and also to protect Trump from subpoenas to testify about his involvement in the invasion of Congress in January 2021. He is also co-founder of the Freedom Bench, from which the rebellion that overthrew McCarthy began.

Jordan is expected to face the leader of the Republican caucus, Steve Scalise, in the election for the presidency of the Chamber, scheduled to begin on Wednesday (11). Trump’s own name was presented by deputies from the Freedom Bench.

In principle, any citizen can be elected president of the Chamber, although traditionally the position is occupied by deputies. But, under Republican Party rules, the House cannot be presided over by a defendant in cases involving a potential sentence of more than two years. The four cases against Trump could result in decades in prison if convicted.
