U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is requesting help from state and local governments to enforce federal immigration law, citing a “mass influx” of immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to a Security memo. Internal.
The memo allows state and local law enforcement officials to carry out immigration enforcement by invoking a broad rule that allows the Secretary of Homeland Security to request assistance in certain circumstances.
It is unclear how this would be implemented and whether it will require agreements and training.
“I have determined that circumstances exist involving the administration of the immigration laws of the United States that endanger the lives, property, safety, or welfare of residents of all 50 states and that an actual or imminent mass influx of aliens is approaching the southern border of the United States and presents urgent circumstances that require an immediate federal response,” wrote Acting Secretary Benjamine Huffman, citing the increase in migrants in recent years.
Huffman admitted that encounters at the border have declined, including in the past month, but argues, “While this number is a large reduction from the peak of the last four years, it is still very high.”
Throughout the week, administration officials focused on building a law enforcement apparatus to carry out the immigration crackdown ordered by President Donald Trump. This included sending additional troops to the US southern border, despite fewer crossings.
State and local authorities have previously worked with Immigration and Customs Enforcement under what is known as the 287G program, which serves as a tool to strengthen immigration law enforcement in a given area. Thursday’s (23) memo goes further than that, and requests help from law enforcement authorities across the country. The order lasts 60 days but can be extended.
