The interior department of the United States government said on Friday that it officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to America (in the US, citizens often refer to the country as “America”), as well as Pico Denali from Alaska to Monte McKinley.
President Donald Trump ordered the name changes as part of a wave of executive actions hours after taking office on Monday (20), fulfilling a campaign promise.
“As directed by the president, the Gulf of Mexico will now be officially known as the Gulf of America, and the highest peak in North America once again will be named Monte McKinley,” the interior department announced in a statement.
Alaska’s peak had been called Monte McKinley before, in honor of former US President William McKinley, but was renamed Denali-which means “high” in the Koyukon indigenous language-in 1975 at the state’s request.
“These changes reaffirm the nation’s commitment to preserve the extraordinary inheritance of the United States and ensure that future generations of Americans celebrate the legacy of their historical heroes and assets,” the department argued.
In his inaugural speech on Monday, Trump stated that McKinley, a republican who was president from 1897 to 1901, “made our country very rich through tariffs and talent-he was a born businessman.”
McKinley led the US in an expansionist era, winning Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico as territories. Hawaii later became a state of the US.
Although Trump can direct the US geological service to change as he calls Mexico’s Gulf, this name change would hardly be internationally recognized.
Mexico, who, like the US, has a long coastline surrounding the region, said the name Gulf of Mexico is internationally recognized and has been used as a maritime navigation reference that goes back to hundreds of years.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum jokingly suggested earlier this month that North America, including the United States, was renamed “Mexican America” – a historic name used on an old map in the region.
