A judge in the state of Illinois banned Donald Trump this Wednesday (28) from appearing on the ballot in the state's Republican presidential primaries for the role he allegedly played in the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Still, the decision was suspended, giving Trump a short period of time to appeal. A similar decision by the state of Colorado is pending review by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie Porter granted the request from Illinois voters who argued that the former president should be disqualified from the state's primary ballot and general election ballot for violating the anti-insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.
The move comes a month after the Illinois State Board of Elections rejected a lawsuit against Trump. In a unanimous, bipartisan vote, the elections board dismissed the case because it said it did not have jurisdiction to review the matter.
Illinois is now the third state where Trump has been barred from the polls, after Colorado and Maine. But those rulings have been put on hold pending an appeal of the Colorado case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Trump can appeal Wednesday's ruling in Illinois state courts.
He has won similar cases in many other states.
