Trump’s children are subpoenaed to testify in family business inquiry

The New York Attorney General’s office has subpoenaed two of former US President Donald Trump’s sons to testify in the civil investigation that determines whether the Trump Organization manipulated their property values.

The information was publicly disclosed this Monday (3), in a court case in which the judge set a timetable for dealing with a dispute over the subpoenas for testimony of Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

The attorney general’s office has already summoned the former president to testify and set the deadline of January 7th. Trump’s lawyers said they would take steps to overturn the subpoena.

An attorney for Ivanka Trump and Trump Jr. did not respond to a request for comment.

Eric Trump, the company’s executive vice president, was previously subpoenaed and testified in late 2020.

The subpoenas against Trump’s sons come amid an ongoing criminal investigation into the Trump Organization and its executives to see if they inflated the value of some of their assets.

Prosecutors at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office have interviewed other witnesses in the case in recent weeks. The New York Attorney General’s Office joined the District Attorney in the criminal investigation earlier this year.

The Trump Organization said Attorney General Letitia James’s poll is politically motivated.

“Letitia James is the most unethical attorney general this country has ever seen,” said Alina Habba, a lawyer representing the firm. “The way she has set up her office through this political witch-hunt goes beyond prosecutorial standards and violates basic constitutional rights. Their actions are a threat to our democracy and I intend to hold them accountable to the fullest extent”, he added.

The Trump Organization sued James’ office last month, alleging that it is biased and that its investigation into the former president and his company is unconstitutional. A request was also made to a judge to block the civil investigation.

James’ office said in a statement that the company had repeatedly tried to delay the investigation into its trade negotiations, adding: “Our investigation will continue relentless because no one is above the law, not even someone by the name of Trump.”
