Tsavousoglou: We will raise the issue of sovereignty in the islands of the eastern Aegean if they are not demilitarized

Ankara is continuing its inflammatory statements targeting the islands of the eastern Aegean, with Mevlüt Tsavousoglou stating that if they are not demilitarized, “we will open the issue of sovereignty for discussion”.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, the Turkish Foreign Minister showed maps, which “gray” the entire eastern Aegean. As he said, “there is a condition in both Treaties for demilitarization. Greece has been militarizing them since 1960. The islands must be demilitarized. If Greece does not retreat, we will open the issue of their sovereignty for discussion.”

Mr. Tsavousoglou pointed out that Turkey sent two letters to the UN, accusing Greece of violating the Treaties.

At the same time, he announced that Turkey is terminating the joint mechanism of the Supreme Cooperation Council with Greece, saying that the Turkish side will send a relevant letter, while he spoke of hostile statements by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as Athens’ inconsistent stance on efforts. .

M. Tsavousoglou spoke about an expansionist policy on the part of Athens, arguing that in this way he violates the status of the islands, since, as he said, “International Law is clear”.

Commenting on Mitsotakis’s trip to the United States, he said that the Greek Prime Minister spoke against a NATO ally and lobbied the Congress against Turkey.

“Greek politicians believe that they will not be satisfied with their audience if they do not attack Turkey 5-10 times a day,” said the Turkish Foreign Minister.

Asked about the sale of F-16 aircraft from the United States to Turkey, Tsavousoglu said that the US Congress is in favor of supplying the aircraft to Ankara.

The statements of the representative of the ruling AKP party Omer Celik, who reiterated the Turkish position for the demilitarization of the Greek islands and “wondered” if “it is fashionable to resolve the disputes with weapons?”
