Firefighters were today trying to extinguish a fire that broke out near residential areas in southwestern Turkey, using ground and aerial means, the local forestry authority said.
The regional forestry authority of Mugla province said the fires, spread by strong winds and temperatures hovering near 40 degrees Celsius, are threatening a hotel and residential areas in the small coastal town of Icmeler near Marmaris.
The Turkish coast guard blocked off the bay and cut off sea traffic in the area where firefighting planes and helicopters were collecting water to help put out the fire, he added.
Television footage showed black and white smoke billowing near the coast and approaching residential areas as bystanders stood on beaches.
