Turkey is not backing down on the S-400s but is asking for more missile systems

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has said Turkey is open to alternatives to Russian S-400 air defense missiles.

The purchase of Russian weapons “was not a choice but a necessity” for Turkey, as efforts to buy air defense systems from allied countries failed, Akar told Bloomberg in Doha, Qatar, on Monday.

Akar said Turkey could find a way to buy such weapons from its allies in the future.

“The (S-400) market is a comprehensive deal, but on the other hand, we need more,” Akar said.

Turkey has been looking for air defense systems since the 1990s and has begun working with the United States and European countries to acquire them, Akar said. “But unfortunately we could not do it,” he said.

Turkey is in talks to buy air defense equipment with France, Italy and the United States, Akar said, trying to create a climate of supposed bargaining to push some of the parties involved to take the coveted step for Ankara an hour earlier.
