Two Philadelphia police officers were shot on Monday night near Benjamin Franklin Parkway, one of the most important in the city, as thousands of people celebrated a show in celebration of the United States Independence Day.
A Philadelphia Highway Patrol officer sustained a graze wound to the head and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder, a source told CNN .
Both were taken to Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition and were evaluated in the emergency room, a hospital spokesperson told CNN.
Videos posted on social media showed crowds of people running down Benjamin Franklin Parkway as fireworks lit up the city’s skies.
It is unclear whether police have arrested anyone involved in the incident, but Philadelphia police are directing people to avoid the scene.
Earlier in the day, in Chicago’s suburb of Highland Park, a gunman on a rooftop opened fire on families waving flags and children riding bicycles in a Fourth of July parade, killing six people and injuring more than 36.
