Two Spaniards, an American and a Czech arrested in Venezuela for plotting against the Maduro government

Three Americans, two Spaniards and a Czech were arrested in Venezuela on suspicion of plotting to destabilize the Latin American country, Interior Minister Diostado Cabejo announced on Saturday. A spokesman for the US State Department said on Saturday night that it had been informed of the “arrest” of a “US serviceman” in Venezuela and referred to “unconfirmed information of the detention of two other US citizens”. But he categorically rejected Caracas’ accusations of US “involvement” in a “conspiracy” aimed at “overthrowing” the Maduro government. The case is expected to further strain Caracas’ relations with Washington and Madrid in the wake of Venezuela’s disputed July presidential election.
