the vocalist of U2 Bono and guitarist The Edge gave a surprise performance at Khreschatyk subway station in Kiev capital of Ukraine, this Sunday (8).
The band said in a tweet on Sunday that the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky “invited us to perform in Kiev as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and that is what we came to do”.
The artists were joined by the lead singer of the Ukrainian pop-rock band Antytila, Taras Topolia, who enlisted in the Ukraine and was participating in operations in Kharkiv one of the focuses of the Russian offensive in the country’s territory.
In an Instagram post, the band said that “We sang “Stand by you” without rehearsal, just improvising! To support Ukraine and all our people. A very important moment for us and for the whole country”.
Citing names such as the president of the U.S Joe Biden and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen the band asked: “help our president, our diplomacy, extract Ukrainian soldiers from Mariupol, Azovstal, where the Russians are literally organizing hell, right now”.
On Saturday (7), the Ukrainian government reported that all women, children and elderly people who were at the steel mill, surrounded by Russian troops, had been evacuated. However, Ukrainian soldiers remain at the scene.
The Soviet-era steel mill, the last bastion for Ukrainian forces in Mariupol has become a symbol of resistance to Russia’s wider operation to seize swathes of eastern and southern Ukraine during the 10-week war.
Under intense bombardment, soldiers and civilians had been trapped for weeks in deep shelters and underground tunnels that crisscross the site, with little food, water and medicine.
