Uber passenger who pays in cash will need to take a selfie for rides

Uber announced this Monday (23) a new security tool in which the passenger who wants to pay in cash will have to take a photo of the face before requesting the ride.

According to the company, the photo will not be shared with the driver and will not undergo biometric verification. However, it will be stored on Uber’s servers, available for later consultation by the authorities, if necessary.

The tool, called “U-Selfie”, is still working on an experimental basis, and the request will only occur for some users who prefer to pay with cash and have not offered data from a digital payment method (credit or debit card).

Uber said the feature was among the most requested, according to internal research, and was created with the safety of partner drivers in mind.

In addition to U-Selfie, Uber also has other user verification tools, such as verifying the CPF in the Serasa Experian database and verifying documents (RG or CNH) through photography.

In recent months, the company has been announcing a series of measures. At the beginning of April, for example, Uber made changes to its travel gift card, which started to show drivers the detailed destination address of their passengers even before accepting the trips.

Until then, drivers in most parts of the country saw only the region of the final destination.

In Rio de Janeiro, Uber also announced the integration of the app’s “Call the police” button with 911 service, which can be used by both the driver and the user.

When activated, the location and data of passengers are passed to the authorities, with no need for verbal communication.
