UFRGS student is killed during academic work on Ilha das Flores, in Porto Alegre

Student Sarah Silva Domingues, aged 28, was shot dead on Tuesday (23), while doing field research on Ilha das Flores, in the Arquipélago neighborhood, in Porto Alegre. Sarah was from São Paulo and was studying Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

The student's colleagues published farewell messages on social media, stating that Sarah was on Flores Island taking photos for her Course Completion Project (TCC), when she was shot.

According to the Civil Police, the crime took place in the early evening, when two individuals passed by on a motorcycle and fired shots in front of a commercial establishment.

In addition to Sarah, a 53-year-old man also died. Police chief Thiago Lacerda revealed that the man had a criminal record for carrying a weapon and threatening, and that he would initially be the target of the attack. The 2nd Homicide Police Station of Porto Alegre is investigating the case.

In an official note, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at UFRGS declared official mourning on the afternoon of this Wednesday (24), and held a farewell organized by the Academic Directory (DAFA), a collective of which Sarah was part.

Sarah dedicated her years of study to popular justice movements. A militant of the student movement and leader of the União da Juventude Rebelião (UJR), she was coordinator of the Correnteza Movement, director of the National Union of Students (UNE), the Central Directory of Students of UFRGS and member of the University Council of UFRGS.

The wake will be held on the ground floor of the Faculty building, on Campus Centro, from 9am on Thursday.
