The General Union of Workers, UGT, could change its acronym and become a UGTT that he would also refer to the workers on his behalf. The Federation of Industry, Construction and Agro has approved the proposal at its 28th congress, held in Madrid.
To be official, the change should be approved at the confederal congress of the UGT, which will take place in Valencia in May. The leader of the organization, Pepe Ãlvarez, recognized during the Madrid congress that the union wants to adopt a “feminist surname”as part of the transformation that society is experiencing, according to Europa Press.
This petition would also encompass the Workers’ Statute, which would also become that of female workers in a movement that, for Ãlvarez, would mean taking up the “flag” of “equality”. “Trade unionism has to pick up that flag.”
If the change occurs, the organization, which has almost 133 years of history (it was created in August 1888), would share its initials with the also historic Tunisian General Labor Union, born in 1946.
