The UK will suspend some arms exports to Israel, with around 30 of 350 arms export licences suspended, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced on Monday (2).
The decision was due to a “clear risk that they could be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law,” Lammy said, speaking to lawmakers in the House of Commons.
Lammy said a government assessment had concluded that “for certain UK arms exports to Israel, there is a clear risk that they could be used to commit or facilitate a serious breach of international humanitarian law”.
Under the country’s Export Control Law, about 30 of the country’s roughly 350 export licenses to Israel will be suspended, some of which “include equipment that we assess is for use in the ongoing conflict in Gaza,” Lammy said.
The UK’s suspension of some arms sales to Israel “is not a determination of innocence or guilt,” Lammy added. “This is not a blanket ban. This is not an arms embargo.”
