Ukraine’s campaign to attack Russian supply lines and ammunition storage sites far behind the front lines continued this weekend, with Ukrainian officials reporting another long-range attack against Russian military positions in the southern Kherson region.
Serhiy Khlan, a member of the Kherson regional council, said on Sunday that there was “a precise blow” to the occupiers’ military unit on Pestelia Street in the city of Kherson.
The unit was hit twice on Sunday morning, Khlan said.
Geolocated footage and video in Kherson showed a thick column of gray smoke rising into the air on Sunday morning.
“Witnesses report the screams of Russians under the rubble. Occupants shoot into the air when someone tries to approach,” Khlan said.
He told Ukrainian television: “Thanks to modern Western weapons, Russian air defenses cannot intercept artillery. [fogo]”. Khlan also spoke about the plight of civilians trying to leave the region.
“Regarding the evacuation of the Kherson region, there is no humanitarian corridor. People leave at their own risk through Vasylivka towards Zaporizhzhia; the line of cars can last one to two weeks,” Khlan said.
He claimed: “Occupants demand money for departure or even take personal belongings from our people. In case of leaving for Crimea, there are risks of being taken to the filtering camps”.
There is anecdotal evidence that hundreds of Kherson residents crossed into Crimea and then traveled through Russia or Turkey.
What happened?
Sunday’s attack follows a series of explosions near Kherson airport on Saturday, and at what appears to have been an ammunition storage site in the Donetsk region.
The official Russian news agency TASS reported four explosions in the sky over the city of Kherson caused by what it said were Russian air defense systems.
TASS said its correspondent in Kherson reported smoke on Perekopskaya Street in the middle of town.
“Leave Kherson”
Earlier on Friday, Iryna Vereshchuk, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, urged residents to evacuate the Kherson region.
“I ask that you evacuate as soon as possible, by all means. Don’t wait,” Vereshchuk said.
“People should look for an opportunity to leave because our Armed Forces are going to vacate. There will be big battles,” she said.
She warned residents that they could be used as human shields by the Russians and staying in the occupied districts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions is dangerous.
Alexander Khinshtein, a deputy in the Duma of the Russian Federation (parliament), denied the allegations of an attack by Ukraine.
“Ukrainian sources gleefully replicate a hoax about a missile attack on the Russian guard base in Kherson,” he said on Telegram. “The missile hit a 4-story building where one of the Russian Guard support units was located. The day before, it was transferred to another location.”
Geo-located images by CNN show the heavily damaged building is in the middle of Kherson, but it is unclear whether it was occupied at the time it was hit.
Ukrainian military intelligence said on Monday it had intercepted a call between Russian soldiers, in which one of them said that Ukrainian forces had “reached the most important command. They attacked hard.” The soldier said 12 were killed in the attack.
THE CNN cannot verify the authenticity of the call.
