A Ukrainian drone attack on a power substation in Russia’s Rostov region on Monday night (8) caused a fire, the governor of the southern Russian region, which borders Ukraine, said on Tuesday (9) local time.
“As a result of an airstrike in the Rodionovo-Nesvetaysky district, two transformers caught fire at a power substation,” Golubev wrote on the Telegram messaging app, adding that air defense systems destroyed dozens of drones.
Attack on children’s hospital in Kiev
The Ukrainian attacks come after a Russian strike on targets in cities across Ukraine on Monday (8) killed at least 37 people and injured 170 others, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Large-scale shelling hit areas in the capital Kiev, as well as Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.
At least 27 people, including three children, were killed in the capital, the Kiev city military administration said. Of those, two people were killed and at least 16 were wounded in the attack on Kiev’s Okhmatdyt hospital.

Every year, around 7,000 surgeries, including treatments for cancer and hematologic diseases, are performed at the hospital, according to the ombudsman Human Rights Minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Lubinets.
More than 600 patients have been evacuated from the hospital, with more than 100 transferred to other healthcare facilities, Liashko said, according to state news agency Ukrinform.
Russia says it attacked military installations
The strikes were part of a rare daytime bombardment of Ukrainian cities, some of which are densely populated areas far from the front lines.
Russia’s defense ministry said Moscow attacked “Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and air bases of the Ukrainian armed forces” using long-range, high-precision weapons.
This comes a day before the United States hosts a summit of NATO, the Western military alliance, in Washington, at which new announcements on the alliance’s military, political and financial support for Ukraine are expected.
