Ukraine investigates whether Russian troops killed soldiers after surrender

Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating whether Russian troops killed two Ukrainian soldiers after the surrender.

The investigation, which is being overseen by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office, was announced a day after video of the incident was shared by the Ukrainian government on social media.

The incident occurred near an observation post on the outskirts of the village of Stepove, near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, the office said in a statement.

“The murder of prisoners of war is a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a serious international crime,” the statement read.

The Ukrainian military said on Saturday (2) that the images showed the execution of two prisoners of war. A CNN was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the video.

Russia has been accused of committing a series of crimes since it invaded Ukraine, although the Kremlin has denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier this year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for his alleged role in a scheme to deport Ukrainian children to Russia.

Ukrainian authorities investigate a substantial number of criminal and war crimes cases, including 3,000 involving children.

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets wrote Saturday on Telegram that the killing of unarmed soldiers was “not an isolated case.”

A video that emerged in March appeared to show Russian troops executing a captured Ukrainian soldier. Two videos that emerged the following month on pro-Russian social media appeared to capture Russian troops beheading Ukrainian soldiers.

Lubinets said he believed Ukrainian authorities would be able to identify the Russian troops responsible.

“I believe that our law enforcement and intelligence agencies will be able to identify the Russian military personnel who committed this crime,” Lubintes added.
