The governor of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, who was sworn in by Russia, accused Ukrainian forces of killing 22 people and wounding 15 others in bombings in the small town of Sadove.
Vladimir Saldo said this Friday (7) that Ukraine deliberately attacked the area for the second time, using a HIMARS missile, supplied by the United States, to inflict as many casualties as possible.
Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-inaugurated governor of Luhansk, an occupied region in northeastern Ukraine, said a Ukrainian attack killed three people and injured 50.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukrainian forces used ATACMS missiles, also supplied by the US, in the attack on the city of Luhansk.
There was no comment from Ukraine on either case.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that both episodes “exposed the inhumane and Nazi essence” of Ukrainian authorities after the United States allowed Kiev to use US-supplied weapons against Russian targets under any circumstances.
Zakharova previously accused Ukraine of using HIMARS missiles to hit civilian targets in Russia’s southern Belgorod region.
Saldo, governor of Kherson, wrote on Telegram that a store packed with customers and employees was hit in Sadove. Among the injured, five of them are in serious condition.
The Russian news agency Tass quoted the governor as saying to journalists: “After the first attack, residents of nearby houses rushed to help the injured and soon a HIMARS missile hit. Two children are among the dead.”
He said Ukrainian forces “deliberately repeated the attack to create a greater number of casualties.”
Russian troops quickly advanced into the Kherson region during the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but Ukrainian forces recaptured parts of the region later that year, including the regional center of Kherson.
Other areas remain in the hands of Russian forces.
Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of launching attacks in an area – called a “double tap” – to increase the number of victims, especially among rescue teams.
