Russia has beefed up its military force and stepped up its bombing in preparation for an offensive on the southern front, where positions have remained largely unchanged in recent months, a Ukrainian military spokesman said today. A Russian attack on the southern region of Zaporizhia would pose a challenge to the Ukrainian armed forces, which are already struggling on the eastern front but still hold territory in Russia’s Kursk region, near the northern border. “The Russians have been preparing for some time, for weeks, to conduct offensive operations in several directions, mainly in the direction of Zaporizhia,” Vladyslav Volochin, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military in the southern sector, told AFP.
