Ukraine peace talks discredited by bombing, says German minister

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told CNN this Friday (1st) that Russia cannot be taken seriously in diplomatic negotiations while its armed forces continue the bombings in Ukraine.

“You know how the situation is, for example, in Mariupol. There are still over 100,000 civilians in the city and even though Putin says every two days that he is having – what he calls – peace talks, at the same time he is bombing Mariupol, he is bombing the so-called humanitarian corridors, he is is not allowing food and medicine into cities, which is obviously a violation of humanitarian laws, so they are war crimes,” Baerbock told Christiane Amanpour of CNN.

“You cannot say, on the one hand, that you are having peace negotiations and, on the other hand, you are bombing hospitals,” he said.

Baerbock also said it was important for Europe to ignore Moscow’s insistence that payment for future Russian gas deliveries be made in rubles. The minister stressed that the priority is to end the bombings in Ukraine.

“It was very important that we gave a strong response to this ruble issue, that we are not being blackmailed and that we are not joking, but this is just a minor part, because the most important thing is that this bombing of civilians ends,” he told Amanpour. .

“His game [Putin] it’s not just about rubles or euros being paid for gas, but it’s still an issue where we need to stop bombing,” she said.
