Ukraine proposes demilitarized zone in Russia to sign peace deal

A Ukrainian presidential adviser said on Monday that a demilitarized zone, 100 to 120 kilometers long, should be established inside Russia along the border with Ukraine as part of a post-war deal.

The zone would be needed to protect Ukrainian regions from bombing, presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter. He comments that the Russian regions that would receive this security zone would be Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk and Rostov. “Probably with a mandatory international control contingent in the first phase.”

“The key topic of the post-war agreement must be the establishment of safeguards to avoid the recurrence of aggression in the future”, he comments.

According to Podolyak, this measure would be crucial to guarantee the safety of the population in regions such as Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk. That is, Ukraine continues to place these regions, occupied by Russian troops, as unconditionally Ukrainian territory.

The statements come on a delicate day, in which the capital Kiev was attacked by several missiles during the morning of this Monday. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence chief has promised retaliation “very soon” after the latest wave of Russian missile and drone strikes. “All those in Russia who still believed, believe or maybe dream that they can scare Ukraine, I want to disappoint you – this is not true. Everyone has been and still is at their workplaces and continues to do their jobs,” said Kyrylo Budanov, in an interview on Monday (29).

More than 70 drones and missiles have been fired by Russian forces since Sunday night, according to Ukrainian officials, who say the vast majority have been intercepted. Several fragments fell on the city. One of these pieces of debris hit a busy street, almost causing a serious accident.
