Crowds gathered in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday afternoon for what was described as the “Unity March for Ukraine”.
Many of the people who took part carried Ukrainian flags and banners with slogans in favor of the unity of Ukraine.
Some 2,000 to 3,000 people marched from Shevchenko Park in Maidan Square, also known as Independence Square, in Kiev to show “unity in the face of a common threat,” according to organizers.
Several demonstrators who took part in the peace process spoke to the international media to express their support for a democratic Ukraine free from Russian influence. “We are together, we are strong. And no matter how crazy our neighbor is, we want to be a peaceful democratic Ukraine,” a protester told CNN.
“We do not want to be friends, to be brothers with this crazy neighbor. We just want him to stay away from our country.”
“The Ukrainians will resist possible Russian aggression. We will not just remain calm and silent while Russia poses a significant threat to our country.”
Among the many slogans was a large red that read #PutinWarCriminal and #PutinMassMurderer.
