The reaction of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky provoked Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov comments that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was of Jewish descent shows that Moscow forgot or never learned the lessons of World War II.
“I have no words. No one has heard any denial or excuse from Moscow. “All we have from there is silence; this means that the Russian leadership has forgotten all the lessons of World War II,” he said. Zelenskywho is a Jew, in a night videotaped message.
“Or maybe they never learned these lessons,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters and the Athens News Agency.
Lavrov’s remarks sparked a diplomatic row between Israel and Russia. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it had summoned Russia’s ambassador using “harsh language” to Lavrov’s comments Sunday in an interview with Italian television.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gair Lapid said Sergei Lavrov had made “an unforgivable and scandalous statement.”
Asked by Italian journalist Giuseppe Brindisi, “how is it possible for Zelensky to be accused of Nazism in Ukraine, since he is of Jewish descent,” the Russian diplomat replied: “And the Jewish people themselves, after all, say that the greatest anti-Semites are, precisely, the Jews themselves.”
